Details of the VPA Autumn Show

Our Autumn Show for 2018 is to be held on Saturday 7th July and will take place in the Blewbury Village Hall.

Anyone, no matter where they live, can enter.  In fact, a couple of years ago we had an entry from Canada!!

The VPA committee prepare the Show Schedule which gives details of the fruit, vegetables, roses, cut flowers, container plants, cookery, handicraft, informal floral art and photography which anyone can enter into the Show. Especially important is the Children’s Section which allows youngsters, in different age categories, to display their skills in gardening, cooking, together with arts and crafts.  There are trophies and certificates to win.

Bring your entries on the Saturday morning between 8.30am and 11.00am and then judging takes place between 11.15am and 1.00pm.  The Show is open to the public between 2.30pm and 4.00pm when the prize giving takes place.

We would love to see more people entering the Show – it really isn’t difficult. If you have some lovely fruit, vegetables or flowers – give it a go!  If you enjoy photography – give it a go!  If you enjoy cooking – give it a go!  If your hobby is handicraft – give it a go!   Just take a look at the Show Schedule to see what the Classes are for each Section – it’s so simple!

The Show Schedule will be available at the end of February from Blewbury post office or you can receive it online by emailing Eileen on vpa.in.bl.up@gmail.com  or ring Margaret in Upton on 01235 850126.

We are looking forward to a bumper crop of entries this year!!

VPA Looking for More Support

Well, it’s almost the end of another year!!  The VPA Committee was disappointed that no-one attended our Annual General Meeting on the 1st  November.  The Members of the Committee conducted the business and all agreed to continue to run the VPA for another year. However, we do need the support of the Blewbury and Upton villagers – remember as residents you are automatically members of the VPA and there is no subscription.

Tickets are still available for our Annual Social which takes place on Saturday 2nd December 7.00pm to 10.00pm at Upton Village Hall. Delicious home made food (dietary requirements catered for), quizzes, games and fun. We have some special entertainment!! Tickets have been held at last year’s price of £9 per person.  Contact Karen at Blewbury Post Office or ring Margaret Maytham in Upton on 01235 850126 or contact Eileen on 01235 510095.

Our full programme for 2018 will be circulated in the Upton News but in the meantime, please pop the following dates in your 2018 diary.

11th August – Visit to Royal Horticultural Gardens, Wisley, Surrey

VPA Autumn News

Well, another growing season is almost at an end and I expect many of us are harvesting and freezing, bottling or drying our produce to be able to enjoy it during the coming winter months.

One of the opportunities available to anyone who has a surplus of apples in their garden is to convert them into apple juice with the help of Sustainable Blewbury.  On SUNDAY 22nd OCTOBER (1pm – 3pm) we will be joining Sustainable Blewbury with our annual PLANT AND CAKE SALE at the RED LION, BLEWBURY.   We look forward to seeing you there.

Really pleased to hear that the visit to Kew Gardens in August was very well supported and that everyone thoroughly enjoyed the wonders of this amazing place.   I was in Scotland at the time and part of my trip was a visit to Cape Wrath (how many of you have heard it mentioned in the shipping forecast on Radio 4?). It was amazing, but I’m sure the coach to Kew was a lot smoother than the bumpy ride to the Cape Wrath lighthouse!

It’s also the time of year for having our ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING and this takes place at 7pm onwards on WEDNESDAY 1st NOVEMBER in the VALE ROOM at BLEWBURY VILLAGE HALL (includes wine and nibbles).  Look forward to seeing you there.

For the last four years the VPA has had a very successful and enjoyable ANNUAL SOCIAL and this year will be no exceptionThe Social is booked for SATURDAY 2nd DECEMBER (7pm – 10pm) at UPTON VILLAGE HALL.   This year will be  “A London Evening” with food, quizes, games and lots of fun.  Watch this space for more details.

We look forward to seeing as many of you as possible at the above events.

DID YOU KNOW ?  The peach is native to China and it is thought to have reached the Mediterranean region in roughly 2000 BC via the Silk Road.

The VPA Annual Summer Show will be held on Saturday July 8th at Blewbury Village Hall. The show is an opportunity for everyone in Blewbury, Upton and surrounding villages to take part and enter home grown fruit, vegetables, flowers, cooking, handicraft, photography and many other categories. We would love to see as many young people as possible entering the competitions – age groups start from 5 years old!!

Exhibitors display their entries early on Saturday morning, they are then judged during the morning and the Show is then opened to the public at 2.30pm. The winners are announced at 4.00pm.

Each year we have a special display and 2017 is no exception. This year we will be having a special exhibition of botanical illustrations painted by local artists, together with a variety of other paintings also painted by artists in the area.

We are grateful for the previous support and enthusiasm shown by the residents of Blewbury and Upton and we are hoping for a huge number of entries this year.

There are many new residents in Blewbury and Upton who may be reluctant to take part – do please have a go!! The Show has a long standing tradition and fosters pride and friendly competition amongst the villagers.

With the variety of classes available there must be something for you to enter

DID YOU KNOW?  The first garden gnomes were introduced to the UK in 1847 by Sir Charles Isham, who brought back 21 terracotta figures from Germany and placed them in the gardens of his home, Lamport in Northamptonshire.  Only one of the original batch of gnomes survives.   Lampy, as he is known, is on display at Lamport Hall and is insured for one millions pounds!
