Charmian and Derek Whitmell would like to thank the many people in Upton (and further afield) who have helped out in various ways over the recent weeks since our mishaps. We are now recovering and hope to be fully operational before long. We have been really touched by the generosity and kindness of the village community and our dogs have met lots of new, exciting walk-mates.

Jo and I would like to say thank you for the  kind wishes and support that the people of Upton have shown towards us since our taking over the George and Dragon. We have made some changes and plan to make a few more along the way. One of the changes that we have made is to the fence in the pub garden. I am sure you will all agree that this was well overdue. A new wooden fence with a secure gate was installed last week to divide the Garden area from the Aunt Sally area, as well as to prevent small children from running around in the car park.

Another change you would have noticed is that the pool table has been re located to the patio area outside. The old pool room has been re fitted to allocate more dining tables in order to use as an overflow as and when required. This room will also be available for small private parties.

The 27th July is Jo’s birthday, we will be have a birthday party for her at the pub, a full Pilipino buffet will be provided, so feel free to come along and celebrate with us.

On the 30th of August (Bank Holiday Monday)  Pig Roast all day as well as our full menu will be available there will also be live music from 4 pm

Wednesday Mid-week Roast

Roast Dinner and a Dessert £10.00 - Bookings Available

See you at the Pub

The big day for the change over to the new multi-bin refuse collection in this village is October 5th.

From that day onwards you will have your rubbish and re-cycling waste collected on the same day of the week but on alternate weeks. Food waste in your separate bin/caddy will be collected every week. If you sign up for the optional garden waste collection, that will be collected at the same time as the re-cycling waste.

In this village our collecting day will be every Tuesday although the day will change for one or two weeks immediately after a bank holiday.

Your new bins will be delivered to your residence between the 9th and the 23rd August but the bins must not be used until after your last normal September collection and must not be put out for collection before Tuesday October 5th.

When your bins are delivered you will find an information pack including a collection calendar inside your kitchen caddy. If your bins have not been delivered to you by 23rd August please go on the District Council website at www.whitehorsedc.gov.uk to look up the telephone number that you need to contact or give me a call and I will sort out the number for you.

If at any time you are unsure about a collection date please go onto your village website and look on the calendar of what is happening in the village. Collection dates are one of the items kept up-to-date on the calendar.

Please be aware that work will start on extending and re-surfacing the car park on Monday July 12th. The car park will be closed to all vehicles for the whole of the week starting on the 12th but the pedestrian access to the hall, the play area and to the Recreation Ground will remain open; all persons using that access should proceed with caution.

It is requested that all children visiting the play area during that week are at all times accompanied by an adult as there will be large equipment operating and at times will be using hot material.

Alternative arrangements are being made for the Blewbury School Bus to pick up from a safe location.

ANTONY and CLEOPATRA

The Courtyard Theatre, Stratford, 21 June 2010

Perhaps it was just as well we went on the longest day because the performance ran for three hours and twenty minutes, even with a few cuts. But tedious it wasn’t for a moment!

The last time I saw the play at Stratford, Antony was drunk - literally - and Cleopatra spent her time in what looked like a shapeless dressing gown. So I was worried that the group were going to be subjected again to a director’s weird ideas or an actor’s incapacity. Wrong on both counts. Granted there was modern dress, but the business suits and Air Force uniforms of the Romans acceptably contrasted with the colourful, often outrageous, fashions and khaki camouflage battledress of the Egyptians. The set was simple so that the action was almost breathlessly continuous, and often excitingly choreographed.

While the ensemble’s portrayal of the characters was always good and sometimes brilliant. Kathryn Hunter’s Cleopatra was tiny, wrinkled, skeletal, and she limped, but the passion and charisma and temper and theatricality were all there, and she rose effortlessly to the tragic regality of her end. Darrell D’Silva’s Antony was also well past his prime, but it was easy to see how he engendered such loyalty, how he had once been a consummate general, and he matched the fire and fury of his great love. Octavius is always a clear contrast to Antony but John Mackay gave him a new dimension. He was an eminently calculating politician who became more and more objectionable as his power grew, though he was allowed displays of anger and a deep affection for his sister.

It was a pity that some jobsworth official would not allow us to board the minibus near the Stage Door and kept the group waiting while the driver toured Stratford’s one-way system to get the bus back outside the theatre after practically all the audience had departed Still, all the other memories are exciting and colourful and entirely pleasurable.
