March 2014 at Cornerstone Arts Centre

January 29, 2014

February is almost upon us and, with all the rain, wind and grey skies we’ve been enduring over the past few weeks, it’s good to know that spring is on its way, bringing longer days and colourful spring flowers to cheer us.  Looking ahead to March we have lots of exciting shows coming up.

On Sunday 2nd there’s a super afternoon of music especially for children and families in Blast Off With Kid Carpet.  Not only will Kid Carpet and the Noisy Animals blast off into space but they’ll keep everyone entertained as they make friends, play games, contemplate the world and finally rock out at a grand dance contest.  Along the way they’ll share lots of interesting facts and information.  Astronaut costumes are very welcome but not obligatory!

Stand-up comedian Lucy Porter comes to Cornerstone on Friday 7 March.  Familiar to many from her appearances on Have I Got News For You, Never Mind The Buzzcocks and Mock the Week, Lucy’s thoughtful and funny show will include anecdotes from her real life.

The Only Way Is Downton comes to us direct from the West End on Saturday 22nd.  Combining the super popular period drama with contemporary reality TV shows Luke Kempner is a superbly versatile actor and impressionist, and switches between thirty two different characters.  You really don’t need to know anything about Downton to enjoy an evening of great entertainment.

There’s a real treat in store for folk music lovers on Saturday 29 March with Emily Smith, one of the leading singers of the contemporary Scottish folk scene.  She’s been likened to ‘a Scottish Joni Mitchell’ and has worked with a wide range of artists from the folk scene and beyond.  She’s touring to launch her new album ‘Echoes’ and is accompanied by Jamie McClennan on guitar, fiddle and vocals and Matheu Watson on guitar and whistle.

Finally we have a great range of activities lined up for the February half-term and Easter holidays.  More information is available on the Cornerstone web site or from the Box Office.

Village News from your Police Community Support Officer

January 10, 2014

December 2013 brought tragic events to the village of Upton with the case of the missing teenager Jayden Parkinson.

As events unfolded focus was quickly moved to Upton and it became necessary for the Police and its search teams to move into the village and set up an operations point near the church. This story has no happy ending, as we know that tragically Jayden’s body was eventually discovered at a location in Didcot. During the time the Police were in Upton there were many officers present along with Police vehicles. I myself along with other PCSO’s from Milton Park and other stations were placed on reassurance patrols in the village.

I have to say I was struck by the patience, understanding and compassion that was shown by villagers that we met on our patrols. During this sad time, the residents of Upton behaved impeccably and offered their help to the police on many occasions.

Thames Valley Police would like to thank all members of the public who offered to help or gave their support in the search for Jayden Parkinson.

This month we have seen some terrible weather and two days before Christmas I found myself on the A417 in Upton dealing with a fallen tree. This had blocked a lane by the cider shed lay-by. And it wasn’t till 3 hrs later we finally had the tree removed courtesy of a very much in demand Highways division. Well done lads!

While there, I was also assisted with traffic management by a new member of our team, PCSO Steve Thompson, who has recently completed his training at Sulhamstead. I’m sure you will all join me in welcoming Steve to the area.

If you should come across a fallen tree blocking a road, please do not try and move it yourself as you could be putting yourself in danger. Please call the Police on 101 and give the call handler the best description of the situation and location you possibly can.

Jessie West has kindly given me permission to use the Upton Village hall meeting room for the next few months. This will begin with my ‘Have your say’ meeting on the 15th of February from 3.p.m till 4.p.m. If you have any issues you wish to discuss with me then please come along.

My e mail address michael.clayden@ thamesvalley.pnn.police.uk

Lastly, I would like to take this opportunity to wish you all a Happy New Year.

February 2014 at Cornerstone Arts Centre

January 9, 2014

Cornerstone’s spring season opens on Saturday 18 January with the Chairman of South Oxfordshire District Council’s Charity Gig which has become a popular annual event.  This year’s chosen performer is new global jazz talent Rebecca Poole (who just happens to hail from our very own Nettlebed!) and her band.  Profits will go to The Chiltern’s MS Centre and The Oxford Heart Centre Heartfelt Appeal.  It’s sure to be a fantastic evening; Rebecca has performed at the Royal Albert Hall and is a regular at Ronnie Scott’s.

February brings our one-off workshop for adults with Charleston: The Dance of the 20’s.  Offering the opportunity to boogie and shimmy to your heart’s content (think Sophie Ellis-Bextor, Patrick Robinson and Abbey Clancy in Strictly), come along and dance the winter blues away on Saturday 8 February.  All levels are welcome and no partner’s required.  If you fancy something a little less energetic we’re very excited to have Sunny Ormonde and her One Woman show on the afternoon of Saturday 22 February.  Listeners to Radio 4’s The Archers will know her as the feisty Lilian, aka ‘Pusscat’, and she’ll share behind-the-scenes secrets and anecdotes plus a Q&A session.  But it’s not only Archers aficionados who’ll be entertained by this fabulous February afternoon of stories, banter, favourite pieces and a great repertoire of theatre.  It’s back to the 1920s at the end of the month with local non-professional theatre company Jigsaw’s production of Thoroughly Modern Millie, at Cornerstone on Thursday 27 and Friday 28 February.

Highlights for March include – straight from London’s West End – An Intimate Evening with Ruthie Henshall and The Only Way Is Downton.  Ruthie’s one of the world’s best loved and most captivating musical performers and will take us on a journey through her extraordinary career.  Luke Kempner’s one man show was a smash hit at Edinburgh and he’ll perform a roller-coaster set of impressions, spoofing Downton Abbey characters and plot lines and mixing in lots of popular TV and contemporary references.

The Tuxedo Jazz Orchestra specialise in the music of the 1920s and 30s, celebrating the best of British and American Dance bands of the era.  The 10 piece orchestra and two singers are sure to get your toes tapping with a selection of great songs on Saturday 5 April.

February half-term is so often cold and wet.  We have a wide range of half-term activities to keep youngsters occupied and entertained, running from Tuesday 18 to Friday 18 February.

November Notes from your local Police Community Support Officer

November 6, 2013

Since my last article, many, police officers,PCSO’s and Special constables, have been involved in rural crime week. Events and stalls were set up at various locations around the area including an exhibition trailer at Millets Farm and West Hanney. Talking to members of the public, we asked them to help us fight rural crime by signing up to ‘Thames Valley Alert’ a message system that keeps the public informed if there is anything happening in their area. This was a huge success.(The Thames Valley alert scheme can be found on the Thames Valley Police website www.thamesvalleyalert.co.uk)

Also Neighbourhood watch co-ordinators joined Police officers and PCSO’s and toured ‘hot spots’ in the area noting and checking anything suspicious that they came across. In particular areas such as beauty spot car parks.

This brings me to my next subject, car theft. There have been a number of thefts from vehicles in our area in particular in car parks near to the Ridgeway. If you are parking at a beauty spot please remember to take any valuables with you.

Do not leave on display Sat Navs, Mobile phones, Lap Tops, Cd’s and any clothing or bags. Put all items out of view or if possible take them with you.

Officers are patrolling these areas and if they find a vehicle that has any items on display the officer will note the registration of the vehicle and a letter of advice will be sent to the owner. When carrying out these checks, I’m often amazed at what people will leave openly on display in their cars. Here’s a good tip. If you use a Satellite Navigation system, and happen to take it with you on a day out, don’t leave a sticky mark on the windscreen when you remove it. Wipe it off. That way the thief won’t think you have a Sat Nav locked away in the glove box.

On Monday the 7th of October I carried out speed checks in Upton and Chilton. Of the checks in Upton, out of 59 drivers checked there were none speeding and in Chilton, out of 73 there were only two. Please vehicle owners mind your speed particularly in built up areas including villages and especially near Schools. People often ask me what I do if anyone is speeding, and the answer is I place their vehicle details into our speed watch system which tracks if the vehicle has been flagged before. I also send out a letter of advice to the speeding driver.

On the 9th of October I was able to pop along to the Chilton Parish council meeting and give my area beat officers report which was well received. I will also be attending the Upton Parish Council meeting on the 19th of November at Upton Village hall at 20.00 hrs.

On the 25th of October, Pc Laura Schmid and myself attended Chilton Primary School and gave a talk to the Children on staying safe on Halloween night and respecting others privacy. A talk on Bonfire night and the firework code was also given as we are now nearing the 5th of November.

My next HYS meeting will be held on the 23rd of November at Upton village hall at 15.00 till 16.00 and at Chilton Village hall at 16.00 till 17.00. Please come along if you have issues you think I can help you with.

Stay safe

News from Blewbury Post Office

October 17, 2013

We have several items of lost property, a blue cardigan, a red ladies jumper, 2 pairs of specs, a small key, and a few items of non valuable jewellery, (a ring, a bead necklace, a penguin charm, and a fairy earring!), if no-one claims them, we will give them to a charity shop!

Last date for posting to Operational BFPO’s is 29th November.

Airmail Last Posting dates are all in December, so no need to panic just yet! But please be aware that Airmail to Far East, Australia, USA & Canada etc (ie; non Europe) are 4th/5th/6th December!

We will be having the Scout Xmas Post box, for local mail (25p each)

The Christmas Stamps are on sale in early November, and I am ordering the Royal Mail children’s competition winners too!

Please remember to tell us if you have perfume, phones, aerosols, nail polish etc in your parcel; we have to put special labels on them! Some items are not allowed to be sent at all!

We are getting a lot of people asking us about our privatization! Its Royal Mail that this affects, NOT the Post Office, we have been told that the Post Office aims to become a “Mutual” organization; however, the Royal Mail employees are not happy at all, there may be strikes before Xmas, we have cards to post to our MP if you are interested. The worry is that if Royal Mail loses the contract with the PO, (in about 7 years) then the next company may not have a 6 day a week delivery or collection!

A34 Road Closures

October 2, 2013

A34 College Farm Road Bridge (Beedon) Refurbishment Works

The Highways Agency will be carrying out essential works to refurbish the College Farm bridge which carries the A34 over the local road at Beedon. Work will be undertaken in various phases.

Initially narrow lanes and a 50 mph temporary speed limit will be installed to enable work to take place to the central reservation. This work involves re-waterproofing and reconstruction of the central reserve and will be undertaken overnight.

Full weekend closures of the north and southbound carriageways will then take place to enable the removal of the old surfacing, waterproofing material and verges, then application of the new waterproofing (which must be allowed to cure), the reinstatement of the new verge and the resurfacing of the bridge. Once works have commenced, traffic will not be permitted to drive over the bridge through the works area.

For the safety of the workforce and our customers, and to keep overall disruption to a minimum, the following proposed traffic management restrictions will be in place on the A34 in West Berkshire:

  • Monday 28 October (10pm to 6am) – Full overnight closure of the A34 northbound carriageway from M4 Junction 13
  • Tuesday 29 October (10pm to 6am) – Full overnight closure of the A34 southbound carriageway between the A4130 Milton Interchange and M4 Junction 13
  • Tuesday 29 October to Thursday 14 November – 24 hour narrow lane running and a temporary 50mph speed restriction, and nightly lane closures
  • Friday 15 November (10pm) to Monday 18 November (6am) – Full weekend closure of the A34 southbound carriageway from the A4130 Milton Interchange to M4 Junction 13
  • Friday 22 November (10pm) to Monday 25 November (6am) – Full weekend closure of the A34 northbound carriageway from M4 Junction 13

The works are highly weather dependent and if work is unable to proceed on these dates due to poor weather, the closures will be rescheduled for January/February 2014 so as not to clash with local authority Christmas embargos. Should the need arise to reschedule these full weekend closures the narrow lanes and temporary speed restriction will be removed once the works to the central reserve is complete.

These full weekend closures are required to ensure the safety of both the workforce and the travelling public, due to the nature of the activities to be undertaken. An alternative traffic management option was considered but this would have considerably increased both the duration of the construction period and the traffic congestion.

Significant delays will be expected during the weekend closure periods, and it is advised that you plan ahead of your journey to allow for extra time or avoid this route where possible.

Details of diversion routes are included in the Highways Agency’s College Farm Bridge Refurbishment Letter. The distances mentioned are inaccurate – they should read:

Diversion Routes

1. Motorway Permitted Vehicles – For both the north and southbound closures the main strategic diversion route for motorway permitted vehicles will be via the M40, A404/A404(M) and M4 – the distance is 68 miles and the expected delay time will be a minimum of 60 minutes, dependent on traffic flows. This diversion route is in place due to its suitability for all types/sizes of vehicles and where other major roadworks aren’t in place. This route has been agreed by the local authorities, police authorities and other Highways Agency areas. Unfortunately the stretch of the A34 that is closed doesn’t have another primary road running nearby which can be used as a diversion.

2. Motorway Restricted Vehicles – During the closures, a signed route will be in place between Speen (near Newbury) and Milton (A4130), via Hungerford and Wantage. Access to local villages can be made from the A338 and manned gates located at the M4 Junction 13 roundabout and A4130 Milton Interchange roundabout.

Crime Prevention Advice

September 8, 2013

With the weather being hot recently, many of us leave windows and doors open during the day, however if you are in the front of the house never leave a back door open and again if you’re at the rear of your home don’t leave a front door open and unattended. This is best to bear in mind when in the garden.

It only takes seconds for an opportunist thief to enter your home and steal anything left on display and unattended. It could be your wallet, door keys/ car keys or cash left on a table or even your laptop. Never leave car keys or valuables by doors or open windows.

Whenever you’re leaving your home, even for a short period of time make sure you have locked all doors and windows.

If you’re going on holiday only inform a trusted neighbour that you will be away or if you think your home is vulnerable contact your local neighbourhood police team and ask them to keep an eye on the property when on patrol in the village.

Never mention on social media sites that you are going away on holiday and when and how long for. Personally, I’m quite cautious of mentioning my holiday plans in public places such as public houses or busy shops. The old adage “walls have ears” is best to bear in mind.

Making your home appear to be occupied by timer lights and leaving a radio on can make a difference. If you’re going away on holiday then cancel milk and papers and place the waste bin in its usual position and not left by the road. Do not leave garden tools, ladders etcetera easily accessible in your garden, and make sure your shed is locked.

Always double lock your doors using the key and never leave your key hanging in the lock. I have seen examples of this practice when I’m out and about on patrol and it usually results in me alerting the surprised owner that they have left the key on display for any would be thief to take advantage of.

There are many ways you can make your home more secure. For example, by fixing a security sensor light that overlooks the driveway/entrance to the house or placing one so it overlooks the rear garden, Mortice locks for doors and windows. Even a gravel path can act as a deterrent to would be thieves as anyone approaching the house will be heard walking or driving on it. If you are thinking of installing a burglar alarm never install a dummy alarm. Experienced burglars can spot the difference between the fake and the real alarm.

If you have tendency to keep large amounts of cash in the home then place it in a safe that is hidden from view. Make sure any property within the home is marked with your postcode. Especially, televisions, laptops, computers and game consoles.

Diesel thefts from oil tanks are not uncommon and its best to try and hide the tank by growing foliage around it or fencing it off. Placing an alarmed padlock on the tank also acts as a deterrent.

If you see anyone is acting suspiciously or a vehicle that appears to be driving up and down the village with the occupants peering into properties then phone Thames Valley Police non emergency number 101. This also applies if you see a strange vehicle that has been parked outside or on a driveway of a home that you think is unoccupied. If you see or have reason to believe a burglary is in progress then please phone Thames Valley Police using the 999 emergency number.

Try and note descriptions of anyone acting suspiciously and the registration, make and colour of the vehicle seen if there is one.

Lastly, I hold regular ‘have your say’ meetings at the village hall in Upton so if anyone has any issues or would like further crime prevention advice then please pop in and have a chat. The next “Have your say” meeting will be held on the 28/09/13 at 15.00 hrs till 16.00 hrs.
