October at Cornerstone, Your Local Arts Centre

August 24, 2013

October brings a host of performances including the opportunity to see three fantastic contemporary theatrical adaptations starting with the hilarious The Complete Works of William Shakespeare from the Reduced Shakespeare Company.  The Duchess of Malfi, Webster’s stupendous Jacobean masterpiece comes to Cornerstone on 12 October and its themes are just as relevant today as they were in the 17th century. Finally Shakespeare’s well-loved As You Like is suitable for ages 12 and over and family tickets are available.

Younger members of the family are well catered for too.  There’s comedy with Little Howard’s Big Show, a super adaptation of Pinocchio from hiccup theatre, written by the popular Michael Rosen and on 27 October we have The War of the Buttons, a delightful show suitable for both deaf and hearing audiences.  There is also a workshop before the show.

Alan Whicker tribute on ITV

July 26, 2013

Graham de Wilde

Graham de Wilde

Upton’s resident composer Graham de Wilde is one of the contributors to ITV’s tribute to Alan Whicker, Journey’s End, to be aired on ITV on Sunday 28th July at 10.15pm.

Graham composed the track “Newsweek”, the title theme from “Whicker’s World”, and had a top-twenty hit in 1981 with “Wikka Rap”, a comedy spoof.

In tribute to the veteran broadcaster who died recently the documentary looks back at the ground-breaking, 50 year career of Alan Whicker. This is the story of a TV pioneer who brought the world into our living rooms – whether he was in Venice or Palm Beach, Hong Kong or the Australian Outback, on the QE2 or Orient Express, or simply interviewing some of the planet’s most fascinating characters – from plastic surgeons to the rich and famous.

Brian Simpson

June 20, 2013

With sadness we acknowledge the death of Brian Simpson.

We remember his many years of commitment to the Village Hall Trust and his sterling work he did as Treasurer so effectively and efficiently. Not only in the day to day finances, and in making every penny earned count, but in the mammoth task of securing and handling the funding that was achieved for the extension and improvements to the village hall.

Brian retired from the Trust in 2011 but continued along with his wife Daphne to support village activities.

St Mary’s church also enjoyed his quiet wisdom and financial expertise as he served for many years on the PCC .  How we loved to hear his measured tones while reading the lesson on a Sunday morning.

I’m sure I speak for everyone involved with the Drop–in,  the Bowls Club, the Wine Club, those who shared his love of croquet, and those of us who had the pleasure of working with him. A true gentleman. He will be remembered with great fondness.

Warning about council tax phone scams

May 31, 2013

Residents are being warned to be on their guard against bogus officials offering council tax refunds or threatening them with fines.

There have been several incidents reported recently across Oxfordshire, including in South Oxfordshire and the Vale of White Horse.

The fraudsters operate by ringing, texting or visiting residents claiming to be from the local council, valuation office or some other company which deals with changes to council tax banding. They suggest that you are either due a council tax refund, or owe more council tax and must pay it promptly to avoid a fine. They will then ask for personal information and bank details to process the refund or payment or they may ask for a fee to secure a refund or band reduction for you.

If you receive one of these calls, texts or visits, do not give out any personal information, end the call as quickly as possible and do not give any money to anyone who visits your home. The fraudsters can get aggressive and ring back if you put the phone down but this is all part of the scam to make you act as they want.

Neither South Oxfordshire nor Vale of White Horse District Council would ever call residents directly to demand bank details in this manner. Where it is believed that someone either owes or is owed money they will be invited to contact the council themselves to arrange payment. You will never have to pay a fee to have your council tax band reduced. It costs nothing to make an appeal against the band your home is in.

If there is any change to the amount you have to pay you will receive a bill through the post explaining the situation.

If you are in any doubt as to the authenticity of a call concerning your council tax account please call 0345 302 2313 (South Oxfordshire residents) or 0345 302 2315 (Vale residents).

To report a suspected incident of the scam, residents can contact Oxfordshire County Council Trading Standards on 0845 0510845.
