This was the Jubilee Day of the Queen. We had the Thanksgiving Service in Church at 1.15 p.m. The Hymn was two first and two last verses of Hymn 457. I preached a short sermon from Leviticus XXV. 9. “Then shalt thou cause the trumphet of Jubile to sound.” After this we sang “GOD save the Queen” (Mrs Humfrey had given pretty pink enamel cards with a gold enamelled head of the Queen and Upton, Jubilee Day June 21st 1887 on them with the words), and I then gave the Blessing. The Church was so crowded that we were obliged to bring in Chairs, and some stood outside. We then all went to Mr. Church’s Orchard and sat down to a hot dinner of baked and boiled beef (114 pounds) and baked and boiled mutton (a beautiful fat sheep given by Mr Humfrey) broccoli, parsnips, and baked potatoes, plum-puddings etc. and 36 gallons of Dymore Brown’s XX ale. All the men, women and lads and girls, in employment in the village were there; and we sent dinners to four persons who could not come. The tables were prettily decorated with flowers from Mrs Humfrey’s Conservatory and our garden. I presided and gave only two toasts “The Queen”, and “Prosperity to Upton”. With the last I coupled Mr. Humfrey’s name. All went off very pleasantly. We then went to the field by the railroad (opposite Mr Anger’s) where all the children had tea, and the grown-up people played at cricket, and had dances and games. Every one expressed their gratification at such a happy day.
At 9 o’clock my wife and I walked up to Hagbourne Hill to see the numerous beacon-fires.
Wednesday, June 22.
The Aston Jubilee Day. Very successful. At the dinner Sir John proposed “The Queen”, and I “Prosperity to Aston”.
