Thanksgiving Form for Princess of Wales; safe delivery, used at all Services.

ALMIGHTY and most merciful God, by whose gracious gift mankind is increased, we humbly thank Thee for that Thou hast vouchsafed to deliver Thy servant the Princess of Wales from the perils of childbirth, that Thou hast made her a joyful mother, and granted her the blessing of a son.  May Thy watchful eye and fatherly hand still be over her: support and comfort her in the hours of weakness, and day by day renew her strength; that so she may arise and go forth to praise Thee in Thy church, and serve Thee in all good works to the glory of Thy Holy Name.  Defend the Infant Prince from every danger that may happen to the body, and from all evil that may assault and hurt the soul.  Enrich him with all spiritual blessings in Christ Jesus, and as years advance, may he increase in grace, in wisdom, and all Christian virtues.  Look down, we pray Thee, with the favour that Thou bearest unto Thy people upon the Royal Parents: fill them with all heavenly benediction, that they may faithfully live and walk according to Thy will in this life present, and may be partakers of Thine everlasting glory in the life to come.  Implant in the hearts of Thy people a deep sense of this, and of Thy manifold mercies to us as a church and nation, and give us grace to show forth our thankfulness by dutiful affection to our Sovereign, by brotherly love one towards another, and by constant obedience to Thy commandments; so that passing through this life in Thy faith and fear, we may attain to Thy heavenly kingdom, through the merits and mediation of Thy blessed Son Jesus Christ our Lord.  Amen.

This was the First Anniversary of the Aston and Moreton Benefit Club.  We met at 11am at Mr. Taylor’s (Filberts) house and marched in procession to Aston Tirrold Church, preceeded by the Witney Amateur Band (5th Oxfordshire Rifles).  In church the Band played “God save the Queen”, and then the Revd J. L. Hoskyns said Prayers.  After the third Collect the members of the Band sang (exceedingly well) an Anthem “How beautiful upon the Mountains”, and at the conclusion of the Prayers the Old Hundreth Psalm was sung.  I then preached the Sermon – my text II. Peter I.5-7.

After the Sermon the Band played the Hallelujah Chorus.  We then proceeded to Mr. Wellingham Fuller’s barn & dined – Mr. Hoskyns in the Chair.  Many Toasts were given – the first “Church & Queen” – and several good speeches made.  After dinner we adjourned to the meadow and had many rural pastimes.  I should say there must have been 500 people in the field.  The whole day passed off most pleasantly, and was a decided success.  The proceedings closed at about 9pm.

A FORM OF PRAYER TO ALMIGHTY GOD;

For the Relief from the Plague now existing amongst Cattle, and for Protection against Cholera.

To be read until further order, in all Churches and Chapels of England and Wales, and in the Town of Berwick-upon-Tweed, on Sunday the 8th of October, and whenever Divine Service is celebrated, immediately after the third collect in the Morning and Evening Service.  (1865)

O LORD GOD ALMIGHTY, whose are the Cattle on a thousand hills, and in whose hand is the breath of every living thing, look down, we beseech Thee, in compassion upon Thy servants whom thou hast visited with a grievous murrain among our herds and flocks.  We acknowledge our transgressions, which worthily deserve Thy chastisement, and our Sin is ever before us; and in humble penitence we come to seek Thy aid.  In the midst of Judgement, do Thou, O Lord, remember Mercy, for Thy Son Jesus Christ’s sake; stay, we pray Thee, this plague, by Thy word of Power, and save that provision which Thou hadst, in Thy goodness, granted for our sustenance.

Defend us also, gracious Lord, from the pestilence with which many foreign lands have been smitten; keep it far from our borders, and shield our homes from its ravages; so shall we offer unto Thee the sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving for these Thy acts of Providence over us, through Jesus Christ our Lord.  Amen.
