Copied of The Press Report of the Reopening of Upton Parish July 2nd, 1885.

The work of restoring churches within The Oxford Diocese has progressed at such a rapid rate during the last thirty or forty years that at the present day such a ceremony as that which took place at Upton on Thursday last becomes almost an unusual occurrence.

Although most of the Churches in the Diocese have thus been restored, more or less satisfactorily to the antiquarian mind, there are still a few buildings that remain in a state of dilapidation and neglect, specimens of the apathy entertained for them by a former generation.  The remaining few must ere long be subjected to a general restoration until the last vestige of a neglected church is gone.  Upton church which is dedicated to S.Mary The Virgin, is said to be one of the smallest in the diocese of Oxford, and at the same time one of the most interesting on account of its antiquity.  It consists of a nave and chancel, and prior to restoration there existed a west gallery in a very dilapidated condition, which has now been swept away.  When in 1883 it was proposed to put the fabric into a state of complete repair, doubts were expressed by some as to the possibility of saving the old building, on account of its extremely dilapidated condition, but the architect (Mr Slingsby-Stallwood of Reading), whom the Rector consulted had no doubts, and the state of the restored edifice today is an example of what may be done for the preservation of all that is of interest in our ancient buildings by a careful and judicious restoration.

The chief features of the old church is a small depressed door-way on the North side, The Saxon origin of which is believed to be beyond dispute.  Externally it has a rough jointed flat stone lintel, with a roughly formed Tympanum and a rubble arch above; and internally the opining is covered by a plain semi circular arch.  This most interesting doorway was in a very shaky state, but by care and judicious strengthening Mr Stallwood has been able to restore it without removing a single stone, and thus this interesting doorway is handed on to succeeding  generations in much the same condition as when built by the Saxons more than 900 years ago.

Next in interest are the very small semi-circular headed windows of the Saxon or early Norman period, only about two feet and seven inches in width, with the glass almost flush with the outer face of the wall, and plastered wall splays on the inside very deep and bold all round the window.  The other features of great interest consist of the arch between the Chancel and the have, and the south doorway, both of the Norman period of date about 1080.  The Chancel arch has a moulded and enriched impost, but the arch itself is quite plain and very simple; The Chancel arch opening is only seven feet wide, and the whole height is only eight feet.  The south door has plain joints, but the arch is enriched with zig-zag mouldings somewhat  rudely cut.  Time has served to force the arch out of its true semi-circular shape, but rather than remove the ancient stones, the architect has simply strengthened the work in this condition.  On the north side of the Chancel arch within the Chancel is a plain recess forming an  ambry, with part of the oak doors still in existence, and these have been restored.  Previous to the restoration the inside, and covered with plain tiles; the old pews have been replaced with substantial English oak sittings.  The old font bowl of Norman date was sadly out of repair, and seemed quite beyond recovery, but by careful clamping and other means of strengthening, the pieces are firmly held together, and thus a most ancient and interesting feature is preserved.  The base of the font is new, designed in the same style as the bowl.  All the walls of the fabric, which  were extremely dilapidated have been very carefully strengthened , and the outer face of the walling renewed with flints.  The alter consists of a stone slab, supported by very solid English oak framing, and behind is a stone re-table, upon which the proper ornaments are placed. On the day of opening the alter was vested in a beautiful white frontal elaborately embroidered in gold thread and silks by Mrs Hooper, the esteemed wife of the Rector, from the architects designs.

Beside the work already executed there are others provided for the architect’s designs, which for lack of funds have been omitted at present.

These are all oak pulpit, in place of the one of deal, which is only temporary, a porch of open English oak framing, a font cover, and a large oak cross over the Chancel arch in restoration of the mood, which once undoubtedly existed there.

All the works were carried out under the supervision of Mr Slingsby-Stallwood, Messrs Stroud, Gregory and Aldworth, of Hanney.

After the service the Rector, the Rev. R. Hooper entertained the Bishop and a numerous party at luncheon in a tent on the Rectory lawn.

The Bishop presided, but business prevented him from staying to the conclusion.  On his retiring the Rev. Sir. J.L. Hoskyns Bart. took the chair (The luncheon was provided by Mr George of Reading).

Grace having been said by the Chairman, he just gave the health of The Bishop of the Diocese regretting that the Bishops engagements compelled him to leave them so early, Sir John Hoskyns recalled to their minds the active life which his Lordship led in the administration of his diocese, and observed that he was certain that it was with great pleasure that he had visited Upton and reopened their old Parish Church.  He called for three cheers for their renewed Diocesan.  The cheers were heartily given.

The Rev.R.Hooper then gave the health of his two church Wardens. Messrs Humphrey and Izard.  He thanked Mr Humfrey for the invaluable assistance. which he had afforded him in the restoration of their church, the family of Humfrey had long been friends of that Parish; he could trace them back quite five hundred years. (hear hear).  Of his friend “Old Master Izard” he could not say that he was quite as old as the Church, but it was a fact he was as aged as the Century, he having been born in 1800, as to the date of the Church, he could trace it back himself to 1082 and the font to 1150.

Mr Nathaniel Humfreyin responding, recapitulated his knowledge of the Parish before their present Vicar came, and the infrequent and impunctual mode of conducting the service in days gone by.  Since Mr Hooper had been among them now twenty five years the Churchyard had been enclosed, schools had been provided for the Parish, a new vicarage built, and now their church was completely restored.  (applause).

Thursday, July 2nd. (Visitation B.V.M.)

On this day by GOD’s blessing our dear old Church was opened.  We began the day by early celebration at half past 8.A.M.  Present:

  • Richard Hooper, Celebrant
  • Decimus H. Whitehead, Curate of Whiston, York
  • Thomas Izzard, Ch. Warden
  • Sophie Hooper,
  • Sister Anne, S.Peter’s Home, Horbury, Yorks.

The Bishop came at 1.8.P.M. and drove to the Rectory.  After a short stay, we went down to the School, where we all robed.  I then headed a procession singing Hymn 397 in H.A & M.  The Clergy followed, and immediately preceding the Bishop the Rev. D.H.Whitehead of Whiston near Rotherham walked, carrying the ellipsoidal staff.  Sir John Hoskyns, Rural Dean followed the Bishop.  The gateway into the Churchyard had been prettily decorated with roses  and a triumphal arch over which floated the Parish Banner of S. Mary’s Upton.  This was the work of Humfrey.  On our arrival in Church (which was crowded, so much so that many had to stand outside) I said the Prayers; the Rev. J.M.Barch of Blewbury read the first Lesson, and Sir John Hoskyns, Rural Dean, the IInd.  The Psalms and Lessons were special, selected by myself – the 2nd Lesson by Barch and Sir John.  The Bishop preached from Ps. 84 verse 3. An excellent sermon.  He alluded to the sanctity of home life, and the Home of the Blessed Virgin at Nazareth, mentioning the day as the visitation of the B.V.Mary.

After the service the Bishop and Clergy came to the Rectory gardens and with others who were invited sat down to luncheon under a marquee on the lawn before the house.  (See printed accounts inserted).  The day was beautiful, and the whole proceedings very successful.

Vth Sunday after Trinity, July 5th.

This was our first Sunday in our restored church at Upton.  The alter remained vested as on last Thursday.
