New stage reached in project to manage Abingdon’s traffic.
Stratton Way in Abingdon (Stratton Way is the north-western third of the triangle of roads surrounding the town centre) will become a two-way traffic road on Sunday, October 1st, as part of Oxfordshire Highways improvements aimed at managing traffic flow and improving the street environment for pedestrians, cyclists and shoppers.
At the same time right turns into and out of Bath Street at its junction with Stratton Way will also be banned. The new traffic signals at either end of Stratton Way are already operational but due to the scheme’s current transitional status traffic queues are being experienced on the approaches to the town centre.
Following October 1, attention will focus on the installation of the traffic signal entry point on the approach over Abingdon Bridge, near Hales Meadow car park, which will complete the first phase of the council’s Abingdon Town Centre Improvement Scheme. Other work that has already been completed as part of the scheme includes the new bus waiting area on Stratton Way and the removal of unnecessary street furniture to de-clutter the general street landscape.
