Two youngsters from the village are working hard at their swimming.
Alex and David Murphy have been swimming for just over a year. Their coach Iryna is from Russia and is fantastic – their technique has developed really well (see the Didcot Barramundi page).
In his first year Alex broke the county record for Breaststroke in the county finals for 12 year olds. He also qualified for Breaststroke and Freestyle for the Regional finals but had to compete in the 13 year old group. He just missed qualification for the national breaststroke finals by 1.9 seconds.
In the regionals Alex came 4th in both the 100M and 200M Breaststroke with times of 1.18.22s and 2.50.36s. If he had been born a few days earlier he would have won the 12 year old Regionals and probably got a high placing/medal in the nationals.
The swimming season goes from September to June so his goal this year is to reach the national finals.
In his first year David qualified for the county finals and won Silver in the 50m freestyle for 9 year olds. David’s goal for this year is to reach the regional finals for 10 year olds as there is no national finals for that age group.
