DID YOU KNOW?  In the late 1700s Napoleon offered a prize of 12,000 francs to anyone who could come up with a method of preserving food.  Healthy daily rations were essential to feed a huge army on the march.   It was over 10 years before Nicolas Appert, a confectioner known as the ‘father of canning’, scooped the award for his method of preserving food in airtight glass bottles.

Happy Gardening,

Eileen
