Christmas Carols and Readings at St Mary’s
The annual Christmas event for the Friends of St Mary’s will take place in the
church on Saturday, 17th December at 4:00pm.
To set the atmosphere as dusk falls, the church path will be lined with
lanterns and once inside, we’ll enjoy traditional carols interspersed with
readings on a Christmassy theme. At the end, there’ll be mulled wine and an
almost limitless supply of mince pies!
There’s no charge and all are welcome. Do invite your friends and
neighbours to join us!
We look forward very much to seeing you on 17th
.

The Adventure of the Christmas Pudding: a Hercule Poirot Mystery

Poirot is summoned to Whitehall for an urgent request to assist with a
challenging mystery. A priceless ruby has been stolen from an Egyptian
Prince in scandalous circumstances and a reluctant Poirot is enlisted to help.
Join the Upton Christmas Readers for murder, mayhem and Christmas
pudding as Hercule Poirot’s little grey cells are pitted against a dastardly
criminal mastermind over a traditional English country Christmas holiday.
After a two-year hiatus, the Upton Christmas Readers are back with a lively
adaptation of a festive story by the Queen of Crime and Wallingford local,
Agatha Christie.
Tickets £6 (£5 concessions) available on the door or in advance from Karibu,
High Street, or Finches, Stream Road. Refreshments are included. Raffle
tickets will be available on the night.

Upton Village Fête
Many thanks to everyone who helped make this years fete both a success and fun
for everyone who attended. Whether you ran a stall, served teas, baked
cakes, put everything up and packed it away again or contributed in any
other way, your help was invaluable and it just wouldn’t have been the
same without you!
The money has now all been counted, expenses totted up and a summary of
the takings from each source of income is attached. After deduction of
expenses (the band, Morris dancers, publicity etc) the net profit, to be
distributed equally between the village hall fund and the church, is
£1,883.81. That’s a drop from the past couple of years because a lot of
people were away so we had to adjust what we could offer accordingly, but
a very healthy sum to each organisation nevertheless. Many thanks to Brian
and Giulia for dealing with the finances (plus the cakes, set-up etc., etc,!).
When we look towards next year, we’ll think about the date in relation to
the school holidays, which undoubtedly had an impact on the attendance
and takings this year, and we welcome any thoughts and suggestions for
future activities and events. In the meantime, thanks again for all everyone
did to create a great day!

Upton Village Fête
Upton Village Fête will be held on the village recreation
ground on Saturday 3rd September between 1:00 and 4:00 pm.
In the central arena there’ll be a gymnastic display and a not-too-serious
dog show. All sizes and shapes of dogs are welcome! – please call Gloria
Hancock on 850683.
Wantage Silver Band will be playing and Tracey Seelig’s ladies Morris
Capering Crew will entertain us during the afternoon. We’re also promised a
great display of classic cars and possibly even a couple of steam traction
engines!
The fête is in aid of Upton Village Hall and St Mary’s Church, and there’ll be
plenty of opportunities to spend your money! Amongst the many stalls will
be a tombola, books, garden plants, preserves and ice cream, and to keep
you going there will be the usual magnificent teas, cakes and a barbeque.
For children, there’ll be a special area with games, toys and other delights.
As ever, we rely on the generosity of Uptonians to donate cakes (please
contact Giulia Rippon), tombola prizes (Ian and Judy Robertson) and books
(Bill and Sue Harper – or leave your donations in the church porch). We
also need assistance from 9:30 am on the day to put everything up, then
take it all down again at 4:00 pm. Please contact Paul Batho (851251) if
you can help with this.
Thanks to everyone who is working hard to make this a special day for
Upton. We look forward to welcoming you all!

Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Street Party June 2022
We had well over 100 people from the village attending the event, the sun
shone and we enjoyed an amazing spread of food with everyone contributing
and with some eye catching red white and blue cup cakes.
The tables were decorated with flowers from the garden, the bunting was
up and it was an excellent occasion to re-acquaint and to meet new
residents from the village.
We sang God Save the Queen and had a toast both to Her Majesty and to
Upton village with a glass of bubbles and a celebratory cake beautifully
made and decorated by Ros Caffyn.
There were games for the children and a “Best Prince & Princess”
competition. A huge thanks from us all to the Committee who organised the
event – Chris Traynor, Fiona Betts, Ros Caffyn, Guilia Rippon, Brian Rippon
and Kieron Humphrey.
Thanks to Rob Traynor for being the official photographer and to all the
many helpers on the day. Photos can be seen on the village Facebook pages.
