Tartuffe
Oxford Playhouse, 24 May 2006
From a range of possible trips, the committee (i.e. Irene) chose the Moliere translation, which had been well received when it was at the Watermill.
We reckoned 16 tickets – 4 cars full – was about right, and we tried to calculate possible donations to the drivers to cover petrol and parking.
Then there was a nail-biting wait for about 10 weeks. Some who had supported the original idea of a theatre group said they hated Moliere, and of course others had prior engagements. The last ticket was actually sold on the day of the performance. Even then, somebody couldn’t make it because of a bad cold.
Still, the seats were good, the play was brilliantly translated and acted, and very funny. A good time was had by all, and every single Uptonian who went rang or wrote to thank the organisers.
All in all, it was a fair start to the venture.
